Why Write-A-Thon? You’re Bored!

Welcome writers! We are counting down to the launch of my new book, Write-A-Thon: Write Your Book in 26 Days (And Live to Tell About It). Why write-a-thon? Because:

1. Deadlines work.

2. It’s cheaper than therapy.

3. You have something to say.

4. We need to hear your story.

5. You can do anything for a short period of time!

6. Hard goals transform your life.

7. You need a vacation.

And today’s reason:

8. You’re bored!

You’ll find boredom where there is the absence of a good idea.

—Earl Nightengale

There’s little I despise more than my children telling me they are bored. Really? With books, art supplies, and a big old imagination, who can be bored? It seems that even in our over-informed and over-stimulated age, boredom happens. We get tired of the same-old tasks and routines. Instead of mindfully attending to our lives, we zone out on television and bad food. We can usually tell we are bored because we indulge in too much of something—too much food, alcohol, online surfing, or television.

The opposite of boredom is being curious and engaged. Instead of passively participating in an activity, we feel smart, passionate and animated. We lose track of time. When we are done with the activity, we feel energized.

Writers, if you are feeling bored, a write-a-thon might be just what you need. What if you used the time you were spending being bored and used it to write that book you’ve been thinking about for years? Think about it! This might just be the year you sign up for National Novel Writing Month and kick boredom out of your life for good!
